                                                    GILSCOTTHERON H'RAP'BROWN THE LAST POETS

By Anne Michelle Erbynstein
Words became their life and life took on meaning in thier words.  They were the artists, the soldiers of sound.  Gil Scott Heron, H Rap Brown and The Last Poets artisits of the spoken word who made thier climb to fame through soliloquis that banged a gong to awaken the slumbering mind of a tumultuous America.

The voice of Rap's messengers infiltrated the music industry through an era guided by the plight of the 1960's neo-social movement which siezed the attention of African American people and the American public.  Like any other soldier during this era whose chant's for educational, employment and desegregation rights reached through a window of hope in Washington D.C's Congressional forum, Rappers of the 60's brandished a spoken weapon against racial hatred and with it they joined in the fight for civil rights during a movement that ended in 1964.  With the encouragement and preceptual contributions of the great Reverend Dr Martin Luther King Jr., the signing of Civil Rights laws by former president Lyndon Johnson gives thanks to the messengers, the rappers of the 60's, who raised a banner of recognition for the path that would be layed for justice to be accessed by the people of a darker culture.  'Just Because,' as stated in the message against racism and recorded by the Last Poets, a " woman screams from a cause unknown...there have been many causes for men to die for , but many men are dying for a cause..."  Rap stretched across the bantering lines of Beatnick messages just because it's purpose would melt upon the hearts and minds of listeners reminding that discrimination had been extreme, corrupt and intolerable.

JONAH KJ-52 SORRENTINO

Jonah's first recording,  7th Avenue, produced in 2000 on the Essential record label,  Nashville, Tennesee, opened the doors to a new direction in his  career.  Sorrentino's  first love was in coaching and counseling youth through youth ministry.  At one time,  youth ministry filled his life and shined light into the lives of young people who may , otherwise,   have been passed over.  The teachings about Christ from the vantage point of a savvy Christian savant became the substance of Jonah Sorrentino's music, while young people remained his greatest fans and disciples.

By 2003 Sorrentino's hit recordings, included in a collaboration of his greatest hits, had been produced in cooperation with III Harmonica's and Pillar and the Thousand Foot Krutch.  Sorrentino won the Dove Award in 2004 for his work with these recordings, for 'It’s Pronounced Five Two,' and again in 2006 for 'Behind the Musik' and in 2007  for 'Remixed.'

Although he claims his disfunctional background inhibited his success,  Jonah gives the glory to God for having overcome the problems faced by a family member's co-dependence and his single parent's challenged financial circumstances,  enduring through a near cripling craving for anti-depressants throughout his childhood.   He is grateful that his family's misfortune neither took him far from home, nor away from the foundation he was given in the principle  teachings of God's son Jesus Christ.

Jonah Sorerentino, now 34 years of age,  extends to the youth and others the word of God through his messages and scriptural explications that are available now at his online web site.

Sorrentino radiates,  through his music, his hope for youth and love for his fellow man.  By this, Jonah Sorrentino has cut a path through the thicket.  By the grace and mercy of Christ, Jonah continually provides his generous spiritual contributions to youth through rap ministry.  As well as the encouragement he later returned and gave to his  family members, through his love and Jesus Christ, Jonah assisted his family to become the victors of their fate; finacially fit and not co-dependenty-- giving this as a testament to God's patience, His power and His long abiding love for all people.

Through his unique Rap/Hip-Hop style music, Jonah Sorrentino soloist, pianist, beatbox artisit and minister will remain a blessing and a lamp of encouragement to all who must search for the spiritual strength to over come life's often ineviatble odds, KJ-52.   Sorrentino's career success--that's what the love of God can do!
